Dream Valley or Drømmedalen is a farm in Sollia, Hedmark, about 45 minutes away from the closest town. Tina Buddeberg lives there with her family: 15 horses she relates to through the principles of natural horsemanship. During our PBL we lived and worked with Tina to help make the place ready for winter.

Among other things we built a sturdy fence around her front yard, to keep the horses out in winter; we partially rebuilt and prepared a barn and its surrounding for hay storage and fixed the roofs of a couple of rustic structures the horses use to shelter from storms in winter; we organized Tina’s firewood stores and cleared a camping area nearby; since in previous years some of the water pipes running under her house have frozen, we came up with an insulation system consisting of burlap sacks filled with straw, which we piled up around the pipes in the gap under her house. Then we built a skirt of wooden planks to stop the wind and snow from getting in there.

Finally after Tina mentioned in passing that she cleans up her outhouse once a year and that she would be doing that after we left, our gang decided to do it for her. It turned out to be a surprisingly positive experience: she uses a composting method with wooden chips that keeps the place very hygienic and odorless, and we got to think of and deal first hand with the waste management process, something that is usually completely out of our minds in everyday life.

In the five days we spent in Drømmedalen we worked hard, learned a lot about horses from a different, more humane perspective. We took some wonderful walks and had important philosophical discussions about our relationship with nature. We followed Tina’s strictly vegetarian diet and got to know a totally different part of this wonderful country.

All in all, an unforgettable, instructive and thoroughly enjoyable experience.

We all know that at this school there are many talented artists among us. At the UKM they all got a chance to show what they can do. Although there were fewer acts than last year, it was enough to make the event a good one. There were six acts representing RCN of which three went on to the county finals in Eid. The three going to the county finals, and competing to get to the nationals are:
- Blues Train, Katie, Adrian, Irina and Herborg
- A Vision, Herborg
- All The Small Things, Katerina, Katie, Jezko and Renata
These will show the best music RCNUWC has to offer in Eid the 23.-25. of April.
Good luck guys!

Students from around the world are invited to apply to join us at the United World College (“UWC”) Youth Leadership Summer Course in China – 2010 (“YLSC-China”).

The YLSC-China is the unique educational summer program that aims to bring 100 students together to China from all over the world – with diverse cultures, nationalities, religions, and all walks of life – with the explicit aim of fostering international understanding. The program will be innovative and experiential, combining active learning with hands-on leadership skills training, community service, and outdoors challenges. The program is explicitly designed to foster fundamental leadership skills to enable students to meaningfully contribute to the economic, social and environmental development in their local communities.

The YLSC-China is the only such program currently being offered in China, a country whose importance on the world scene grows day by day. A distinguishing feature of the program is that it will expose participants to not only urban and modern China (e.g. Beijing), but also the lesser-known China (e.g. Ningxia – a Muslim minority region on the ancient Silk Road in western China). Participants will thus be exposed to the complexities of Chinese culture, history, politics, and economy. Students will be introduced to the Chinese language and among other sites will also visit the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and the 2008 Olympic Stadium.

In 2010, the program will focus on poverty reduction and environmental issues that affect developing countries today, a hot topic after the failure of world leaders to reach consensus at the Copenhagen summit in December 2009. An anticipated outcome of the program is for the youth leader participants to come up with their own creative ideas for projects to bring about positive change in their home communities – i.e. creating a youth leaders’ response to Copenhagen ’09.

The YLSC-China is organized by the Red Cross Nordic UWC. Founded in 1962, UWC is the only global educational movement that brings together students from all over the world – selected on personal merit – with the explicit aim of fostering peace and international understanding. It has thirteen colleges on five continents, 120 National Committees, and a variety of summer courses in Europe, Asia and the Americas.
