For the second year now RCNUWC ’s first years have enjoyed the Friluftsveka in Jølster, Sogn og Fjordane. Same plans, same place and completely different snow and weather conditions made for an exciting week with night time temperatures close on minus 20 degrees Celsius. Sun during most days helped on the frosty conditions in the air and also helped warm some people to the winter outdoors. Last minutes changes to the cross country trip gave us excellent conditions on well maintained tracks at Langeland outside Førde and small snow falls during the week improved tremendously on the conditions in the downhill slopes.
All students had four days of activities with two consecutive days on downhill skis, day trip on cross country and a combined kitchen duty and short cross country trip. All also stayed outside one night in a Lavvo (big tents). Most experienced that the minus 20 degrees where kept outside the tent fabric as long as the wood burning oven was going and that you could sleep quite well. The other nights we all stayed together in or close to the Jølster hotel where we also had all our meals thanks to Arne and Jonny who moved the college kantina to Jølster.
The downhill activity was once again managed by Hanne Dybwad from Sunnfjord Folkehøgskule and our downhill instructors were once more from the Jølster Alpine Team. Together with great help from Jølster skisenter the made our days here fun and most developed their skiing skills tremendously. A great part of our students managed to “graduate” from the small beginner slopes to the intermediate slopes thanks to the instructors and a good deal of hard work.
From Alistair a summary of the award ceremony on the Thursday evening that summarize some of the week;
Each year we have an “alternate awards” ceremony, identifying some students “of particular note” while remaining aware that very many others could just as easily have been named. That is, the intent of these awards is to represent others “of that ilk”; mainly, to recognize enthusiasm and have some fun. This year, most of the nominations came from the ski instructors. After surviving the ski slopes, awardees had to contend with the “heaven-lee” assistant – mascara’ed to an apparition of alarming proportions – in order to receive their prizes.
Rubez - Funky Queen of Falls award – the funky sunglasses undoubtedly helped her to discover water on the ski slopes (uniquely, she managed to end up in a river),
Bakina - a category of Environmental Award, “Rage Against the Machine 1″ – for ignoring ski technology and relying on her own feet, descending feet first down the ski lift.
Octaviana - a variant of the above, “Rage Against the Machine 2″ , for walking up half the 2nd lift,
Benas Inflamed Daring Beginner, for burning down the slopes (the record is purposefully obscure on this point),
Marcio The Colgate Award for the biggest, interminable, incessant, non/stop toothy grin,
Abdo *the myth maker” (various nominations were treated in some detail), The “I’m OK” Award, for consistently prematurely misjudging the state of his well being whilst skiing. Like some Greek tragedy, his skiing inexorably wound its way to the same inevitable fateful conclusion . . a crash.
Jakub, Humanitarian Award, for both serving and carrying his fellow humans, the “Maitre d” Award,
Mohammed, the “WannaBe Nude Nordic Award”, for initiating, aiding and abetting a collective stripping of clothes late one night in a forest outside a lavvu
Katie and Renata, for their harmonies in promoting a collective well-being in the hotel lobby, the “I like me so much better when you are naked” Award.
Tangut, for “Flying in the Face of Reason and Reality . to make huge improvements in a short period of time (eg, voluntarily ascending the lift a second time having had various experiences during the first descent),
Linda “Call her lucky” Sturesson, the “What? Another one off to hospital” Award. By completion of the second day, some concern was expressed for the continued Middle eastern composition of World Lit. classes.
Kåre S, Maria, Lee, Mark and Kiwi (now returning to Kiwiland), Bjarte Morten , Kip, Arne, Jonny, Fred, Lena , Angie, Kåre D, Alistair, Linda, Rupert, Mariano, Summer, Cath, Li Dan and Ragnhild (Kåre D’s daughter & ex-AC student)
