Safuge, UKM and other projects

safuge-for-webSafuge has been doing many projects this term outreaching to the Dale commune, the NAV (senior citizens’ home) and participating in theInternational cafés done in cooperation with the volunteers and the office of the Fjaler kommune.

safuge2-for-webOne of the most important projects was the running of a café during the UKM festival in Dale, the regional annual talent competition in every city in Norway at different levels and finally at national level. On Earth Day, we watched a film – The Story of Stuff (click the link to watch it).

The Story of Stuff is a 20-minute, fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns… It’ll teach you something, it’ll make you laugh, and it just may change the way you look at all the stuff in your life forever.” For more information, please go to the website of the producer: http://www.storyofstuff.com.

After watching the movie, students were divided into Advisee groups and engaged in our annual campus beautification. From 8 to 9 pm, everybody was encouraged to switch off all lights to show symbolic support for saving the environment.

on-the-way-for-webIn addition, 29 students and staff (to say nothing of the dog) hiked to Einingsfjell (258m high  hill on the coast of Atlantic) and watched the sunset from there.

It was a merry, relaxed and chatty event bathed in golden and purple light. Sunset in Oslo was at 20.52, but we didn’t know the exact time for Fjaler. So we waited. It happened around 21.30. sunset-3-for-webYet another pleasantly strange Norwegian feature -  it is perfectly normal to go hiking after dinner. In three weeks, nobody will be able to be “caught by dark night” because there will be no such thing.

In the Flekke Skule gymnasium on April 1, 2009 the Laski Boys’ Team defeated RCNUWC champions Finland House after extra time by 12 goals to 8 after the scores were level on 7 at full time. Afterwards, the Finland House Girls’ team registered a first by winning 11-8 over the guests from Poland.

On the heels of Wednesday’s goalball matches with the RCNUWC champions, on Thursday evening at Flekke Skule Laski played against men’s and women’s teams from Flekke – perhaps the first annual Laski-Flekke Goalball Matches. The Polish students won the men’s match by 16 goals to 8, and also the women’s match by 8 goals to 5. None of the local players had ever seen a goalball before!
