To celebrate the permission granted by the school to kayak in the fjord after the cold winter, Andrew Pants and Kiwi worked hard to organize the first UWC kayak festival on Saturday 28th, an event that included nearly 50 people from dawn to dinner time.

The thin layer of ice on the water did not intimidate the enthusiastic kayakers who joyfully participated of the proposed activities and strived to improve their paddling skills. Students and staff members who took part into the festival could have signed up for sea kayaking or river kayaking. It is worth highlighting that a few inexperienced individuals who chose to do the latter realized that the water was very cold indeed.

dscf5205As an annual tradition, a group of College students and staff went to work as volunteers at the Ridderrennet international skiing competition for the disabled. Please see last year’s report for detailed description of the event.

This is a photo of the group of volunteers this year.

Below is a personal story, by Yaomingxin – participant from the College at Ridderrennet 2009 –

Everyone is No.1 – My first Ridderrennet experience

Have you ever skied before? Have you ever tried to ski without using your eyes? Have you ever skied by only using your arms? I had done none of these things before going to Ridderrennet last week. Continue reading »

The group now consists of a core group about 10-12 dedicated first-years ready to carry on the work that was started by our second years and further develop the aims of having a forum for discussion and learning about politics on campus. The present group also have a lot of intresting ideas about how to strenghthen the trademark of the school by creating an external channel for political reasoning and debate (through web-radio, blogging etc). But the main focus would however and of course stay within the school limits with activites such as reading and discussion of politcal texts, presentations from students on politcal issues followed by debates, workshops in rethorics and similar practical subjects.

The sailing ship Mathilde (see this link) is turning 125 this year and she is on a tour of the Norwegian coast. So far she had been to Lofoten, and was on her way south again. She had a crew of five and an assisting crew of 15. These 15 were new each week, and mostly from folk high schools. One crew however has dropped out, and so the owner of the ship - Hardanger Fartøyvernsenter - called the College to see if we could send a crew of 15 for a week.

An enthusiastic crew were selected from the student body and went on their mission with teacher Mariano.

Below is a (long) blog made by one of the participants Maddie Benishek. If you would like to read more about Mathilde, click here and if you want to see more pictures of their week long adventure this is where you want to go.

My high seas adventure with the Mathilde was unforgettable.

On March 18, 2009 the Norwegian Red Cross and the Red Cross Nordic United World College strengthened their bonds by signing a cooperation agreement during a modest yet warm ceremony at the Red Cross Headquarters in Oslo. Four staff members and five students from the college attended the formal procedure.

cimg0053webAt the event, both the President of the Norwegian Red Cross and the Chair of RCNUWC’s Board highlighted the common goals and principles held by both institutions and how important the cooperation between them was useful to building a better world. The President emphasized that the NOK 20.000.000 spent between 1992 and 1995 were part of a long term investment as the students at RCN will become international leaders and prominent figures who will fight for fair societies based on the ideals of the Red Cross and the UWC movements.

After the speeches, the agreement was signed by the two leaders. On the background of the photo stood the five students, who represented the first generation of UWCers that will receive the Red Cross Diploma, a certificate granted to those who have fulfilled a set of pre-determined criteria to pursue an education based on the ideals of the Red Cross.

Besides posing for the picture behind the two leaders and being received by those present at the ceremony, the students displayed the multiculturalism of the school by contributing to the ceremony with Colombian and Nepali dances, a Swazi song sung in Xhosa and an Asian folk story. Moreover, Savant Shrestha from Nepal delivered a speech on behalf of the student body, giving a personal perspective on the Red Cross activities at the college.

With the formal agreement signed, the Red Cross and RCNUWC will undoubtedly strive to follow the terms of the agreement and carry on with the successful cooperation.

14Our dear  benefactor and Council member, Mrs. Marianne Andresen, visited the College on Feb 13, 2009. In the evening, a small group had a pleasant and informal gathering to share our views on spirituality, God, Nature and religious practice. The event occurred in the Silent House, which is her donation to our College. Marianne shared with us some important events in her amazing life and we were all impressed with her energy, vitality, directness and openness. It was an inspiring hour.

All the 11 student participants, from all over the world, loved to be in water. The course started with “dead bodies” on the bottom of the warm pool; exercising laying flat on the bottom, which is possible only if much air is blown out of lungs – a great exercise to feel at home under water.

Some students already knew how to use the mask, snorkel and fins. Others needed to exercise and memorize the fact that one has to inhale deeply and hold the breath before going under the water. Some had trouble sealing their mouth around the snorkel’s mouthpiece. Some were experienced swimmers but some barely managed to stay on water surface. It always impresses me how much the latter improve in just few sessions – from helpless wet kittens thrown into water to sleek marlins who move swiftly and elegantly through the water.

After an euphoric UKM party on Saturday night, 10 brave students left their warm beds ‘very early’ on a rainy Sunday Morning, have breakfast, grab skis and heroically face a Biathlon competition in Nordal.

As Arne drove the RCN van towards Nordal, rain turned into sleet and then into snow, allowing the students to notice a great difference between the weather at sea level and the stunning white landscape on the mountains.

12After getting the numbers and faking a quick warm-up, the students joined Norwegians from all ages at the starting line. One by one, the participants were told “GO” by Arne. As the biathlon is a combination of cross-country skiing and shooting, the competitors had to complete two laps skiing in a short circuit and, after each lap, leave their skis aside, grab a special weapon and strive to hit, with 5 bullets, the 5 black spots on the target. To win, a participant had to hit more targets than everyone else and have the lowest time between the first and the second lap.

The RCN competitors were fearless and their diverse origins turned the competition into a Biathlon World Cup, as Arne pointed out. Furthermore, one member of the team, Luis Mendieta, had the honor to earn the third place in the competition. He hit 9 targets out of 10 and had a difference of mere 35 seconds between the first and the second lap.

21At the end of the competition, the students had a rather pleasant snowball fight with little Norwegian kids, whose aim and physical condition turned out to be way better than the RCN representatives.

Many thanks to Arne for providing those 10 students with a very joyful Sunday and congratulations to Luis!
