We are a group of three first year students, with the Chemistry teacher Ashok Pratap Singh as our leader. This is a new Campus activity and more so a responsibility. Our main goal is to make the whole campus aware of how much energy we consume, and in particular how much of it we waste due to indifference and carelessness.
Having obtained formal approval from the EAC Director, we have decided to have an annual energy saving competition between the different student Houses with the provision that part of the savings could actually be given back to the Houses. This is not a new competition that we are introducing as ‘Nature and Youth’ was responsible for a similar competition as a part of the ‘prestige Inter House Competition’ last year and the winner was ‘Sweden House’.
Considering that environmental protection is ingrained in the vision statement of our college along with the fact that energy conservation has huge monetary implications it was felt that we address the issue of energy saving more aggressively and proactively in order to make an effective contribution in terms of Environmental preservation and financial saving. Therefore, this new EAS has been created and the competition will henceforth be an independent event to underline this fact.
We are working specifically on this and will continue to inform and remind the college community throughout the term as to how we as a community can reduce energy spending. So far the group has had regular meetings and made one presentation at the College meeting. This will be reinforced further by making regular and short presentations during college meetings, power point presentations, and posters. Misusing of electricity is unacceptable, and the group will take photos and keep data of classrooms and buildings.
Something that connects us all in this EAC is an avid interest and dedication to the environment and related environmental issues. Our primary aim is to make the community aware and responsive towards maximizing optimum conservation of energy, thus helping in preventing environmental degradation in addition to saving plenty of money. We have a lot of fun together; hunting down irresponsible energy usage in the night, taking pictures and evidence of the energy “crimes” on our campus, working on different presentations and ways to reach out with our information. This is truly a very creative EAC with a lot of self-responsibility. With experience and innovation, we will definitely improve our efficiency.
